we might not have been able to go out as much as we’d liked to this year, but that didn’t stop architects and designers from creating beautiful public spaces. from places to relax to places that bring communities together, designboom’s reader submissions of 2020 have showcased both intimate spatial experiences and big, showstopping architecture.

shanghai-based architecture firm x+living introduced yet another extraordinary bookstore design, this time situated in the city of dujiangyan, in the south west of china. the new store, with its mirrored ceilings and its tall arc bookshelves, generates a unique, mesmerizing environment where one can explore the wondrous world of literature and cultural heritage.

2 – levin packer architects preserves an original ottoman structure for sofia hotel in israel

an old ottoman house in tiberias, israel, was transformed by levin packer architects into a 120-room hotel overlooking the sea of galilee. designed with respect to the history of the place, the brief for ‘sofia hotel’ included the restoration of the original structure and the addition of a new, contemporary building.

3 – dried palm tree leaves and local wood form roof of vacation house in mexico

situated within puerto escondido, mexico, architecture studio anonimous presented ‘casa cova’, a vacation house sitting just 70 meters away from the coast. arranged on a site between the pacific ocean and the oaxacan mountain range, the residence is designed to accommodate two families, generating two different compounds of private rooms that connect through the common recreational areas.

4 – a 90 sqm rented apartment is converted into a park by DEVOLUTION

on the 27th floor of a 50-story tower block in xiamen, china, DEVOLUTION rented a 90 sqm apartment and transformed it into a green oasis. located within a high-density residential area in xinglin bay, the artistic intervention brings back an essential part of public life – the park.

5 – SHAU forms an elevated ‘microlibrary’ from prefabricated timber in indonesia

designed by SHAU and prefabricated by PT kayu lapis indonesia, the warak kayu microlibrary was the latest addition to the urban landscape of semarang in central javadeveloped around passive climatic design and built entirely from FSC-certified wood, the new intervention not only encourages reading in a low-income neighborhood, but also serves as a live educational spot for timber construction techniques.

with the idea of changing architectural paradigms within one of cairo’s largest informal settlements, ahmed hossam saafan designed the dawar el ezba cultural center in the heart of ezbet khairallah. realized for dawar arts, which is an independent cultural organization based in the egyptian capital, the building intends to provide a place for community arts and social interaction, in addition to creating a vibrant new landmark.

esrawe studio carved out a new restaurant interior that brings a flavor of japan to the santa fe district of mexico citysituated on the ground floor of a commercial building, tori tori santa fe marks the fifth outpost of a line of renowned japanese restaurants. inspired by the ‘subtlety and sobriety’ of traditional japanese craftsmanship, the recent intervention transports patrons into a calm and serene atmosphere, swathed in natural and black-colored timber.

8 – kapsimalis architects builds idyllic ‘saint hotel’ into the caves of santorini

situated in the traditional village of oia, and boasting a prominent position on santorini‘s caldera, kapsimalis architects realized ‘saint hotel’. known for its rugged landscape that was shaped by an ancient volcano, the island’s cave suites have become a popular haven for tourists. this project saw the reconstruction of existing buildings on the cliffside to create an idyllic hotel complex in keeping with classic cycladic architecture.

9 – GBO’s inflatable ‘AIR cinema’ featuring a robotic ride lands in south korea

to celebrate the 100th anniversary of korean film, GBO designed a temporary pavilion that invited visitors to watch a movie while taking a ride on a huge robotic arm. aptly titled ‘AIR cinema’, the inflatable and nomadic structure intended to offer people a traditional film experience in the age of digital streaming.

10 – NH VILLAGE ARCHITECTS designs a ship that provides the cultural experience of vietnam

vietnamese design firm NH VILLAGE ARCHITECTS sets sail its latest project, nambinh ship, along the waters of the huong river, also known as the ‘perfume river’, in the hue city of central vietnam. designed to provide a cultural experience for tourists, the nambinh ship comprises two outdoor terraces on each end of the boat and a dining areain the middle. the shape of the boat takes form of a leaf and is intended to blend in with the surrounding landscape, creating parallels with the natural elements of the world heritage site.

1 – studio velocity’s own office in okazaki, japan

studio velocity has topped its own office in japan’s aichi prefecture with a large, curved, inhabitable roof. the building itself comprises two levels: workspace areas punctuated by small exterior terraces on the ground floor; and a small communal kitchen and dining area on the upper storey, which opens up toward the rooftop. here, trees protrude above the roof, allowing nature to permeate the entire building.

2 – olson kundig’s cabin is the ultimate work from home office

with people around the world continuing to work from home, many of us are looking for ways to make remote working suitable for both professional and personal living. providing inspiration, this project by olson kundig is a 500 square foot (46 sqm) cabin on san juan island in the US state of washington that serves as both a writer’s retreat and guest cottage. the owners asked for a secure space that simultaneously felt connected to its island setting — the mild climate, scenic views, and proximity to wildlife.

3 – OMA completes axel springer building in berlin

exactly four years after the start of construction, the new axel springer building in berlin officially opened in october. designed by OMA, the cube-shaped structure is the latest addition to the publishing company’s campus in the german capital. the building offers 52,000 square meters (559,723 sqf) of work space for more than 3,000 employees and is characterized by its open and transparent architecture. internally, the project is defined by a 45-meter (148 ft) high, light-filled atrium that divides the building into sections. in the valley between, ten terraced stories and 13 bridges seek to provide inspiration for ‘physical encounters in the digital age’.

4 – snøhetta wraps timber office building in austria with a ‘green curtain’

in august, snøhetta completed a timber office building for ASI reisen, an international trekking and adventure travel company. located in natters, just south of innsbruck, austria, the four-story building is surrounded by a lush exterior. this ‘green curtain’ is made up of climbing plants that grow on a suspended metal frame, ensuring that the structure blends harmoniously into its verdant forest surroundings. composed of 17 different warm weather and evergreen species growing in big planters, this curtain also serves as a glare shield and for shading the generous glass surfaces.

5 – arquitectura-G creates a light-filled work space in barcelona

barcelona-based studio arquitectura-G transformed a derelict factory into a cultural and creative center entitled ‘acid house’. the project is programmed as a co-working space for entrepreneurship and business innovation. the building is composed of two aisles, the main aisle with a double pitched roof volume and the second with a double height ceiling space. the project is located in the barcelona’s poblenou neighborhood and houses a varied collection of businesses and projects.

6 – hello wood’s ‘workstation cabin’ is a secluded, work-from-home module

inspired by the growing desire for a personal office space during a work-from-home era, hello wood presented its ‘workstation cabin’. this tiny, architecturally-minded home-office cabin is designed to fulfill the widespread desire for a secluded, private workspace without the need for a home expansion. while the playfully sculpted timber project introduces a space for work and meetings, its flexible program functions as a guest room or children’s playroom. the workstation cabin serves as a place for work that is tranquil, relaxing, and encourages solitude and creativity.

7 – MIA constructs mirror-clad volume to house its office near liège

belgian firm MIA architecture designed its own office in beaufays, a municipality near liège. the project consists of a highly reflective volume that houses an architect’s office and a meeting room as well as and technical requirements. elevated on a base of painted bricks, which provides space for a parked car, the structure is embedded into the grounds of an existing house that was built in the 1970s.

8 – brückner & brückner wraps office in a façade of spruce trunks

brückner & brückner architekten realized the ‘hohes holz’ office and administration building for one of the largest sawmills in europe. the project seems to grow organically from the forested clearing — a play of light, shadow and wood. the team designed the building to suggest a continuation of the surrounding woodland, a celebration of the ziegler group’s neighboring betzenmühle sawmill. the structure is built nearly entirely from the wood sourced on-site, architecturalizing the products and philosophy of the company.

9 – foster + partners organizes hankook’s HQ around expansive atrium

in september, foster + partners completed the new headquarters of south korean tire company hankook. the project follows the ‘hankook technodome’ — the company’s integrated R&D center — which was also designed by foster + partners. the company’s new HQ takes the form of a ten-storey building where floorplates spiral around a central atrium. this results in visual connections across the different levels, encouraging staff interaction, while also letting natural light deep into the heart of the building.

10 – büro ole scheeren reveals a flexible archetype for the future workplace

looking toward the future, büro ole scheeren revealed plans for the ‘shenzhen wave’ in september, a building that will serve as the headquarters of one of china’s leading technology companies. the distinctive project, which is located at the entry to the shenzhen bay super HQ masterplan in southern china, has been conceived as a ‘living organism’ that promotes new ways of working and living together.

here at designboom we take immense pride in the open dialogue that we maintain with our readers. each year we receive thousands of submissions from designers all over the globe, and despite the challenges of 2020, this year has been no different. thanks to our readers, we’ve been able to see creativity and innovation demonstrated across a huge variety of objects. in the past 12 months, we’ve seen beautiful furniture products, conscious design, and sleek solutions to modern life. 

 

 

before we move into 2021, we take a look back at some of the most inspired projects submitted by designboom readers. from a foldable plywood kayak to sculptural coffee tables made from murano glass, we highlight our TOP 10 reader submissions of 2020 – design products.

 

 

1 – self-playing electric ‘circle guitar’ can pick at up to 250 bpm

london-based product designer anthony dickens unveiled an innovative musical instrument concept called ‘circle guitar’. the radical design is essentially a self-playing electric guitar that uses a built-in mechanical step sequencer disc, rotating underneath the strings. the project caught the attention of many musicians – including radiohead guitarist, ed o’brien and grammy-winning writer and producer paul epworth.

2 – murano glass is blown into sculptural coffee tables designed by yiannis ghikas

italian manufacturer miniforms teamed up with designer yiannis ghikas to create the ‘soda’ coffee table collection. made entirely from blown murano glass, the tables are available in two sizes and two colors: bold amber and elegant petrol green.

3 – jason knight develops skateboard decks made from 100% recycled plastic

jason knight developed a way to make skateboard decks out of 100% recycled plastic and he’s releasing it open source. in the fight against plastic waste, the designer is making a download kit containing all the information people need to make their own deck. to help fund the project, knight launched a kickstarter campaign, allowing you to get your hands on the very first batch to be sold while supporting a small-scale plastic recycler.

4 – ILY-Ai is a three-wheeled electric scooter concept made from chestnut wood

in contrast to the sleek, metallic personal mobility vehicles that can often be seen on city streets and sidewalks, mikiya kobayashi conceived of an electric scooter carved from solid timber. called ILY-Ai, this sit-down scooter concept is aimed especially towards those with mobility issues, such as the elderly.

designed by unto, ‘color gem’ is a set of crayons that pay homage to nature in both appearance and feeling. as if picking up a rock from the ground, the crayons intend to stimulate imagination with their patterns of wonderful colors, which change each time the crayon is put to paper.

6 – LAYER’s ‘sequel seat’ is designed to entice moviegoers back to cinemas post COVID-19

benjamin hubert of experience design agency LAYER presented ‘sequel seat’, a premium seat that seeks to elevate the cinema experience while enticing the public back to the movies in a post-COVID-19 world. the project offers the opportunity for theaters to transform the cinema experience for visitors and tackle these challenges in a meaningful way.

7 – fina is a foldable plywood kayak created by cristina borràs

industrial designer cristina borràs developed a kayak prototype inspired by a trip to visit her sister in venice. while walking through the narrow streets of the italian city, borràs’ sister mused how wonderful it would be to have a little boat to sail the venetian canals in. however, the lack of available storage space means it’s difficult to keep a large enough watercraft. this led borràs to design and build her own foldable kayak, which can be neatly stored away when not in use.

graphic designer ting-jui sun, otherwise known as memphis sun, presented his concept for a revised map of taipei’s metro systemthe case study began by evaluating the disadvantages of the current version and understanding how to transform the existing information into a more experience-led design and legible appearance.

10 – habre eco bike is made from local bamboo and is designed to ease pollution in kathmandu

 

conceived by nripal adhikari and lance rake, the habre eco bike was designed in response to issues of urban congestion and pollution in the city of kathmandu, nepal. made by local artisans using regional bamboo, the bike aims to provide a green alternative to gas-guzzling vehicles, reducing air pollutants and therefore improving the health of citizens.

1 – bas uterwijk uses AI to create portraits of famous historical figures

based in amsterdam, bas uterwijk is a freelance photographer that uses GAN (generative adversarial network) to generate hyper-realistic portraits of famous historical figures. trained with thousands of photographs, these deep learning networks are able to generate photographs that look — at least superficially — genuine to the human eye. from michelangelo’s david and napoleon to the statue of liberty, uterwijk uses artificial intelligence to create photography-type images that might give us an idea of how these people really looked like.

2 – autonomous robots used to disinfect hospital rooms with concentrated UV light

out TOP 10 robotic and artificial intelligence stories of 2020 needed to include our battle against coronavirus. as the world was faced with the initial challenge of COVID-19 – as the pandemic first started – robots began to be designed to help the fight by disinfecting hospital rooms with concentrated UV light. developed by danish company UVD robots, the autonomous machines are used as part of regular cleaning cycles and are extremely helpful at preventing and reducing the spread of infectious diseases, viral infections, bacteria and other types of harmful organic microorganisms in the environment by breaking down their DNA-structure.

3 – a japanese university used remote-controlled robots and zoom to hold a virtual graduation

the business breakthrough university in tokyo, who weren’t allowed to have a traditional graduation ceremony due to coronavirus, used remote controlled robots to hold a virtual graduation. also referred to as avatar robots, students called into the ceremony using video-conferencing tool zoom to display their faces on the mobile devices. the newme telepresence robots were designed by ANA group and work as remotely controlled, customizable avatars. the robots, which were dressed in typical graduation caps and gowns, used tablets in place of the face allowing the students to see one another.

4 – singapore deploys dog robots to remind people of safe distancing measures

as a bot that featured many times throughout 2020, the boston dynamics‘ ‘spot’ dog was a must-feature in our TOP 10 robotic and artificial intelligence stories of 2020. the brand explored its many different uses: first we reported how the dog bot is protecting frontline healthcare workers by helping doctors treat infected patients by minimizing their exposure; then, the strait times published a video of how singapore is deploying them at the bishan-ang mo kio park to remind visitors of safe social distancing measures.

5 – foster + partners and boston dynamics monitor construction with ‘spot’ the robot dog

architecture firm foster + partners has also been using ‘spot’ – boston dynamics’ agile robot dog – as a tool to capture and monitor construction progression on-site. the two companies have been working together to explore the potential of a robot in a dynamic environment such as a construction site, capturing changes on a regular basis, and being able to easily compare the ‘as-designed’ models against the ‘as-built’ reality.

6 – bjarke ingels group plans AI CITY in china to advance future of artificial intelligence

terminus group, a chinese technology firm, unveiled a design by bjarke ingels group for its future headquarters in chongqing, china. named ‘AI CITY’, the development will be dedicated to terminus’ aspirations in the fields of artificial intelligence of things (AIoT), robotics, networking, and big data. the first phase of the hi-tech campus, dubbed ‘cloud valley’, takes inspiration from the region’s undulating landscape.

7 – these hyper-real robotic dolphins could replace captive marine mammals in shows

 

 

edge innovations — a san francisco-based design, development, and production studio — has delivered some of the world’s most innovative, technical and artistic creations to visionaries including james cameron and frank gehry. the team, led by former walt disney imagineering creatives, has been working on a hyper-real robotic dolphin intended on reimagining the entertainment, educational, and business potential of the marine animal industry. these real-time animatronics (or mechatronic puppets) bring together live puppeteering, programmed behavior, and artificial intelligence to create a totally unique experience.

8 – bjork and microsoft use AI to create music that changes with the weather

björk collaborated with microsoft to create AI-generated music based on on the changing weather patterns and position of the sun. called ‘kórsafn,’ which means ‘choir archive’ in icelandic, the composition will be played continuously in the lobby of sister city, a hotel in new york’s lower east side that opened in the spring of 2019. kórsafn uses sounds from björk’s musical archives, which she has compiled over the last 17 years, to create new arrangements.

9 – the neomano robotic glove powers people with hand paralysis

koreon start-up neofect developed a ‘ robotic glove’ which can help patients suffering from paralysis for grabbing and picking up the product prototype, named neomano, is a ‘smart glove’ designed to help those rehabilitating after a stroke and spinal cord injuries (SCI). SCI can cause weakness or complete loss of muscle function and loss of sensation in the body below the level of injury, among others.

our TOP 10 robotic and artificial intelligence stories of 2020 would not be complete without mention of the black lives matter movement. a giant ‘gundam’ robot showed its first signs of life in footage shared on social media. modeled after a character from ‘mobile suit gundam’, a 1979 televised anime series, the 18-meter-tall (59 ft) robot has been under construction in the japanese city of yokohama for years. filmed at the ‘gundam factory yokohama’, the speeded-up video shows the automaton taking a knee before demonstrating its ability to move its arms, hands, and fingers.

ROBERTO GRAZIANO MORO DOCUMENTS THE COVID-19 CRISIS IN VENICE, ITALY, IN ITS MOST CRITICAL MOMENTS

 

 

for several years, photographer roberto graziano moro had been engaged in the documentation of the music industry in italy and today’s youth culture, but the pandemic changed the focus of his lens. the north of italy was struck early and violently by the outbreak, and areas including milan and the veneto region were burdened with an increasing number of cases, overcrowded hospitals, and an overwhelming sense of urgency to control the crisis.

FILM DOCUMENTS THE WEAVING OF THOUSANDS OF FLOWERS INTO AN EPHEMERAL CARPET IN BRUSSELS

 

 

in a video titled ‘flower power’, filmmaker, director and producer joerg daiber documented the weaving of more than 500.000 flowers into an ephemeral, 1.800-square-meter carpet at brussels’ grand place. since 1971, ‘flower carpet’ (see previous coverage here) takes place every two years in the historic center of the city, where a hundred volunteer gardeners put together this monumental piece of public art in less than eight hours. though the 2020 edition was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, daiber’s film of the 2018 ‘flower carpet’ offered an alternative viewers can enjoy until the next edition takes place.

‘THE GIGANTIC CHANGE’ FILM VOICED BY WHOOPI GOLDBERG ENCOURAGES ACTION AGAINST CLIMATE CRISIS

 

 

actress whoopi goldberg teamed up with environmental protest group extinction rebellion in a new animation film discussing the global climate crisis. the 3-minute movie, produced by passion pictures, is set in the future, looking back from 2050 to show how people came together to save the world from global warming. the film, entitled ‘the gigantic change‘, was released on friday 5th june 2020, as part of world environment day.

THIS STEP-BY-STEP ANIMATED SHORT SHARES QUIRKY CUES ON HOW TO MAKE SUSHI IN STYLE

 

 

london-based 3D designer and animation director jonathan lindgren created a two-minute film documenting how to make sushi. during the autumn of 2018, lindgren designed a couple of frames based on the premise of a sushi-chef. using this as his starting point, designer and director took further influence from his long-standing passion for japanese animation and wes anderson’s ‘isle of dogs’ film, mixing that with his own animation style.

AI WEIWEI’S CORONATION: THE FIRST FEATURE-LENGTH FILM ON THE COVID-19 OUTBREAK IN WUHAN

 

 

ai weiwei released a feature-length documentary about the lockdown in wuhan, china, during the COVID-19 outbreak. the chinese artist directed and produced the movie remotely from europe, while filming was done by ordinary citizens living in wuhan when placed under an unprecedented lockdown. ‘CORONATION’ examines the political specter of chinese state control from the first to the last day of the wuhan lockdown. sprawling emergency field hospitals were erected in a matter of days, 40,000 medical workers were bused in from across the country, fleets of roving sanitation-fogging robots were deployed, and the city’s residents were sealed inside their homes.

TAKE A SURREAL RIDE WITH FERNANDO LIVSCHITZ’S BEAUTIFUL CHAOS FILM

 

 

known for his surreal, uplifting and dream-like films, argentinian filmmaker fernando livschitz presented beautiful chaos, a movie that literally took us for a ride. set within an amusement park, the video starts by portraying those seconds before the roller coaster starts. people pull the belts over their body, the metal starts screeching, and you hear some faraway screams. some people wave while smiling, others hold hard into their seats and as the roller coaster cars start slowly ascending, people start preparing for the ride. what they don’t know is that this park is part livschitz’s imagination and that there, anything is possible.

2020 was undoubtedly a year of challenge and change, but it was also a year that saw communities come together (socially-distanced, of course). despite these challenges, our readers have continued to create socially-responsible architecture, and products with increased environmental awareness. similarly to 2019, this year we have received thousands of projects that help tackle issues of plastic pollution and climate change, and buildings that are designed to provide for those most in need. over the past 12 months, we’ve also seen advances in medicine as well as a glimpse into the life of japan’s first virtual model…

1 – researchers develop a head-only MRI system to make brain scans more comfortable

a team of researchers from te herenga waka – victoria university of wellington in new zealand – developed a new patient handling system to make MRI scanning of the brain more comfortable, accessible, and affordable. the seated solution intends to reduce anxiety thanks to a number of features, including a remote control for the patient and a window to see out of.

2 – this device captures harmful microplastic particles from your tyres

in the fight against microplastics, a group of emerging designers turned their attention to tyres. the team – known as the tyre collective – created a small device to collect the tiny particles that come off your wheels as you drive. with UK experts emission analytics calculating tyre wear pollution to be 1000 times more harmful than car exhaust fumes, this project aims to capture the problem at the source, ensuring cleaner air and safeguarding our health and environment.

since they first unveiled a prototype back in 2016, the design team at dancer were back with a fully operative and ultralight electric city bus. the project by JSC ‘vejo projektai’ takes typical bus construction and re-engineers it from scratch to make public transport both attractive for passengers and friendly for the environment.

german skincare manufacturer beiersdorf was on a mission to minimize, slow down, reduce, and close its material cycles. with a focus on plastic packaging, beiersdorf’s biggest global brand, NIVEA, launched its first shower gel refill station. the prototype, which will be in select DM stores in hamburg and ettlingen, investigated the concept of reusable bottles with consumers. the machine was been designed, developed, and engineered by a cross-functional team within beiersdorf’s global packaging and R&D functions.

5 – worm skyscraper by yong ju lee proposes a solution to polystyrene waste

‘worm skyscraper’ by yong ju lee architecture was a project that explored an environmentally-friendly solution to plastic pollution. expanded polystyrene, also known under the brand name ‘styrofoam’, is not biodegradable. meaning that a single-use polystyrene coffee cup could stick around forever, and as a result, cause immense harm to the environment. however, what if this synthetic material could be broken down by the humble mealworm?

an intriguing combination of taxonomy, entomology and pharmacology, the insecta – pharma project may have seemed whimsical at first but it actually held an important message from netherlands-based designer and maker, merel slootheer. by placing a singular pill at the center of a laser-cut insect shape, slootheer aims to draw attention to the prevalence of prescription drugs in society by comparing them with the universality of insects.

floating close to the shore of babahoyo river in the ecuadorian city of babahoyo, is a small timber dwelling realized by natura futura arquitectura and juan carlos bamba. the project, called ‘fisherman’s refuge’, involved the improvement of an existing storage shed on the river to create a habitable space for local fisherman and canoe repairman, don teodoro.

9 – building beyond borders works with local community to create ‘the women’s house’ in morocco

in ouled merzoug, a small earthen village near the atlas mountains of morocco, a piece of land was offered by the community to the recently founded women’s association AFOM (association des femmes d’ouled merzoug). within the postgraduate certificate building beyond borders, organized by uhasselt SEE, the participants designed and built in close collaboration with local women and workers. the end result of this participatory process is a women’s house: a meeting, working and learning place in the centre of the village. in this project, the limits of sustainable building were challenged by maximizing the use of local and regenerative materials and the confrontation between traditional and contemporary building techniques.

10 – stone filled gabion walls build an earthquake-resistant tourism center in india

sitting at an altitude of 1700m, the BASA tourism center in khirsu, india, is a building designed by compartment S4 to empower the local village community. the project was originally the winning entry of a design competition to build an earthquake resilient house. however, after further research and development with the local people and regional government, it was finally decided to become a place to promote tourism and stimulate the village economy.

1 – panasonic unveils ‘steampunk’ virtual reality goggles with eyeglass design

to start our TOP 10 virtual and augmented reality stories, we take it back to CES 2020 where designboom was reporting live from las vegas. panasonic unveiled the world’s first high dynamic range (HDR) capable virtual reality goggles. the technology allows wearers to view high-quality content in a compact and lightweight design with an eyeglass-like shape. they are equipped with micro OLED panels that eliminate a ‘screen door effect’, where the fine lines separating pixels become visible in the displayed image.

2 – KAWS & acute art launch monumental AR sculptures in 12 locations around the world

KAWS collaborated with acute art for the launch of expanded holiday, a series of AR sculptures that was publicly exhibited in 12 major cities and locations of six continents from 12 to 26 march. using cutting-edge technology, this project represented a new exhibition model that transcends the physical world and reduces transportation and travel for a global art world – something we all felt as 2020 continued. besides the public exhibition, the launch also included an AR collectible edition and open edition for lease, which were available via acute art’s new platform for collecting and trading AR art.

3 – AR contact lenses place micro-displays inside your eyes

california-based tech startup mojo vision revealed its smart contact lenses, which use augmented reality to place information inside of the wearer’s eyes. the company’s forthcoming mojo lens AR lenses use 14k pixels-per-inch micro-displays to project statistics like health tracking and other data. they also pack wireless radio, image-recognition tech (which it claims will be able to understand the activities you’re engaged in, so as to not disturb you when it’s not wanted), and motion sensors.

4 – olafur eliasson + acute art release ‘wunderkammer’ collection of augmented reality artworks

olafur eliasson has worked together with acute art to produce wunderkammer, an augmented reality collection of natural elements, small artworks and experiments from the artist’s studio. following the collaboration with KAWS earlier in the year, and the launch of its app, acute art then released a second series of artworks, this time with eliasson to open up a world of new possibilities. these works were available to download for free through the app, allowing audiences from all over the world to to collect digitally and enjoy them from the comfort of their own homes.

5 – cai guo-qiang sets off virtual fireworks above the forbidden city in his first VR artwork

chinese artist cai guo-qiang unveiled his first virtual reality artwork, created in partnership with HTC VIVE arts. the work, titled ‘sleepwalking in the forbidden city’, debuted as part of ‘odyssey and homecoming’ — the artist’s major exhibition at the palace museum, beijing, which remains on view until february 5, 2021. for this exhibition, cai guo-qiang uses VR technology to create a fireworks ceremony dedicated to the forbidden city and its 600-year history. the performance is inspired by those typically seen to mark the lunar new year.

6 – sabine marcelis’ digital tactile experiments offer material experiences in a virtual world

 

 

in questioning how we can still experience tactility in a digitally driven society,sabine marcelis presented a virtual representation of design and furniture works that can be experienced through a 3D display technology. the project presents the potential for a solution on how we can still form intimate material experiences across increasingly digital interfaces. for ‘virtual tactility’, marcelis considered her designs to be true sensorial experiences and not simple static works — the experience becomes the function, with a refined and unique aesthetic.

7 – facebook’s ‘infinite office’ is a virtual reality working environment

working from home needed to be included in our TOP 10 virtual and augmented reality stories of 2020. at its first ever fully digital AR/VR-focused conference, facebook introduced ‘infinite office’ — a platform designed to create a virtual working environment. targeting those who were working from home as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, ‘infinite office’ integrates with real environments. however, to enhance focus and flexibility, users can toggle between a fully immersive experience and a mix of virtual displays with ‘passthrough’ for a greater awareness of their surroundings.

8 – everyday experiments by IKEA + SPACE10 explores how technology redefines our homes

IKEA and its external innovation hub, SPACE10, launched ‘everyday experiments’ — an ongoing series of digital proposals and prototypes that explore how tomorrow’s technologies may redefine life at home. the collection so far includes 18 experiments that apply the latest technology available to experience-driven details of everyday living. examples include field’s ‘extreme measures,’ a playful way to calculate the dimensions of a certain space through an ‘expanding elephant’; and ‘optical soundsystem’ by manvsmachine, a speculative design prototype for an augmented reality (AR) application which would allow you to ‘see’ music within your environment.

9 – gramazio kohler pilots ‘augmented bricklaying’ for kitrvs winery façade in greece

researchers from gramazio kohler collaborated with incon.aia spinoff recently launched by the robotic systems lab of ETH zurich, to develop a custom-made optical guidance system for constructing façades. using 13,596 individually rotated and tilted bricks, the design team used an augmented reality fabrication interface to build the façade of a winery in greece. this system was used by local masons to construct the 225 square meter façade in less than three months. the augmented bricklaying process combines the power of computational design with the dexterity and skills of human craftspeople — introducing an entirely new fabrication paradigm.

10 – virtual reality (VR) technology in the fight against COVID-19 at george washington university hospital

in a world that’s rapidly changing, photography gives us the chance to stand still. and in a year as unpredictable as 2020, moments in which we could slow down and reflect seemed to take on a new significance. among the many architecture and design projects, the designboom readers’ portal has been inundated with a huge range of photography projects. in 2020, many of the submissions have highlighted situations in flux, like a snapshot of a quickly-developing city, or a frozen moment underwater.

2 – ‘a paradise lost’ by james kerwin reveals the derelict architecture of beirut

following world war II, beirut became known as ‘the paris of the middle east’  due to its french-colonial architecture and vibrant culture, which drew tourists, intellectuals and investors to the lebanese capital. however, this boom period ended in 1975 with the outbreak of civil war and since then the country has been further marked by various conflicts. after researching the country’s complex history, photographer james kerwin embarked on a trip to lebanon to document the derelict, yet beautiful buildings that have been left behind.

3 – luna ikuta creates a ghostly water garden of transparent california poppies

for her new upcoming series ‘afterlife’, artist luna ikuta stripped away the color and chlorophyll of flowers to immortalize them in an aquatic garden. using california poppies, the bright orange of the petals was replaced by a beautiful transparency, allowing viewers to marvel at the incredible cells and structures that make up the wildflower.

in his latest photography project, manuel alvarez diestro took us to chongqing, the densest city in mainland china. the mega-city, flanked by mountains, and the yangtze & jailings rivers, accommodates its inhabitants in a crowded setting of vertical structures. intrigued by the unique environment, the artist captured the daily routine and transportation of the citizens within the concrete & glass jungle.

7 – photographer takes hidden pictures of rio de janeiro subway passengers for two years

brazil-based visual artist and photographer adriana granado introduced the ‘subterrâneas’ photography book, combining portraits of subway passengers in rio de janeiro between the years of 2016 to 2018. influenced by evan walker’s NYC subway portraits, the project has been completed drawing content by granado’s photo inventory of types, expressions and attitudes of the commuters.

as part of a new book titled beautified china – the architectural revolution, hong kong based photographerkris provoost, complied a selection of the most exciting and iconic buildings that have been erected in china in recent years. with china offering freer rein over what can and can’t be built, architects from all over the world have flexed their creative muscle to shape a new skyline. from arched skyscrapers, infinity loops, stacked chopsticks to moving tubular curtains, this recently published book showcases a collection of the most adventurous architecture from the country.

after many years living in morocco, algeria and egypt, manuel alvarez diestro dedicated a new photography series to the vernacular architecture of northern africa, and in particular, the satellite dishes that populate the buildings. whether clinging onto façades or proliferating on rooftops, the dishes add another layer to the urban fabric, appearing almost like a parasitic organism that’s become attached to the existing structures.

in a year when many of us have spent more time at home than ever, designboom has featured a wide range of private residences that offer their occupants a unique retreat from the outside world. despite being diverse in scale, material, and setting, our TOP 10 private houses all offer inventive solutions for spaces that both respond to, and engage with, their contexts — from a scaffolding-clad house in japan, to a brick retreat in a remote region of south africa.

1 – daita 2019 in japan by suzuko yamada architects

suzuko yamada designed the ‘daita 2019’ house in tokyo, japan with an inhabitable frame of steel pipes and platforms that can be modified according to the demands of daily life. drawing from the informal architecture of forest habitats, the project blends the inside and outside of the residence through a steel construction that connects the garden and the interior. the construction comprises a cluster of platforms and single pipes, which can be easily attached and detached using clumps to perform as entrances, handrails, plant supports, or hangers, according to the needs of the residents.

2 – house of the big arch in south africa by frankie pappas

frankie pappas, a collaborative architecture and design studio, completed this off-grid brick residence within a nature reserve in south africa’s waterberg mountains. designed for an elderly couple with a deep love of the natural world, ‘house of the big arch’ is just 3.3 meters (11 feet) wide. the narrow home threads itself between the trees that occupy the site — preserving the landscape while becoming part of it.

3 – ochoquebradas house in chile by ryue nishizawa

photographer cristóbal palma documented a residence that japanese architect ryue nishizawa has completed on the chilean coast overlooking the pacific ocean. the dwelling is topped with an undulating concrete roof that references the waves crashing against the shoreline. the project is located in close proximity to another concrete house designed by alejandro aravena.

4 – north fork house in new york by SO – IL with shenton architects

SO – IL completed this new york retreat comprising four gable volumes. located on long island, the home’s four wings each serve a different function and have different relationships with the land. ‘sited into a slope, we organized a simple cruciform of gable volumes to frame a collection of varied views instead of a singular panorama,’ explains SO – IL, who designed the project with shenton architects. ‘the house seeks to sample the lively terrain, bringing together different qualities of light, landscape, and vista to define interior spaces.’

5 – casa elias in mexico by alejandro d’acosta

conceived as the ‘prelude to a project to come’, ‘casa elías’ was designed by architect alejandro d’acosta as a temporary cabin with a simple program. located in valle de guadalupe, in baja california, mexico, the residence is sited at the top of a hill, overlooking the undulating terrain below. constructed from recycled building elements, the structure serves as a dwelling for the client to live in until a more permanent home is built.

6 – ha long villa in vietnam by VTN architects/vo trong nghia

with the ‘ha long villa’ in vietnam, VTN architects introduced a response to the nation’s rise in unsustainable development. with an abundance of natural landscapes and heritage townscapes, vietnam has seen an economic growth which has raised the standard of living, but has led to development by clearing away nature. to address this growing reality, the design team created a dwelling that connects its occupants with their natural context. the team explains: ‘the main concept of the house is to create space where people can live in a forest.’

7 – sand house in brazil by studio MK27

offering views of the atlantic ocean, ‘sand house’ by studio MK27 almost disappears into its coastal plot in northeastern brazil. surrounded by tropical trees in the state of bahia, the beach house is elevated on a wooden deck that supports five enclosed volumes. the entire deck is covered by a permeable eucalyptus pergola supported by 14 laminated wood frames. both the deck and the overhead canopy are punctured by several trees that provide residents with a constant source of shade.

8 – stairway house in japan by nendo

in a quiet residential area of tokyo, nendo has taken the humble staircase and supersized it to serve as the main feature of this striking house. designed for two families, the aptly named ‘stairway house’ has been designed by the japanese studio to afford openness and connectivity, all the while maximizing the parameters of the site to create a contemporary home flooded with natural light.

9 – paramount alma in italy by plasma studio

‘paramount alma’ by plasma studio is a faceted space cloaking a previously existing structure in the mountains of northern italy. the tyrolean guest house was originally occupied by six 1960s-era holiday apartments adorned with a pitched roof and traditional timber ornamentation. the project was driven by the heritage building’s need for a common circulation and service core. with the intervention, the underutilized pitched roof space gives way to an angular crown connected to a ground floor reception space and architectural office along the renovated spine.

10 – IHA residence in india by wallmakers

designed by wallmakers, ‘IHA residence’ is a two-storey house in the indian state of kerala. located in the city of trivandrum, the home seeks to be simultaneously serene and adventurous. externally, bamboo — reinforced with steel rods — has been used to support a staircase that serves as the entrance to the property. this space doubles as a sheltered outdoor setting for contemplation and relaxation.

a year of social-distancing didn’t stop collaborations, customizes and concepts when it came to motorcycle and scooter designs. following the trend of highly sculptural shapes in 2019, our TOP 10 motorcycle and scooter designs of 2020 were ever more dramatic in form, although perhaps a bit more uni-bodied. these ranged from an intricate art deco-covered bike, monoliths with two wheels, and even one that inflates from a backpack. brand new launches – as seen from the likes of BMW – debuted electric mobility innovations whereas makers retuned past classics and their gas-guzzling engines for the modern road. 

 

continuing our TOP 10 round-ups of 2020, we look back at 10 motorcycle and scooter designs that attracted our and, most importantly, designboom readers’ attention over the past 12 months.

 

 

1 – kingston custom fashions an art deco, museum-worthy motorcycle

our TOP 10 motorcycle and scooter designs of 2020 start with one that looks so good it belongs in a museum. the kingston custom good ghost was at first a request and now an item in the hass moto museum and sculpture gallery in dallas, texas. it fits the exhibition perfectly: its handcrafted form is shaped in an exquisite art deco style, and completes a trilogy of ‘phantom’ bikes by the german creator.

2 – this is BMW’s scooter of the future, the motorrad definition CE 04

back in 2017, BMW debuted a zero-emission mobility concept called concept link. three years later, the german automotive giant presents the evolution of this concept titled the BMW motorrad definition CE 04, which will go into production from the last quarter of 2020aiming to create a link between the analog and digital worlds we now inhabit, this electric scooter is not only a means of transport but also a means of communication for the urban commuter.

3 – new electric vespa 98 scooter reinterpreted as a modern incarnation of the iconic vehicle

mightyseed designs has introduced the ‘vespa 98 electric‘, a bold reinterpretation of the original vespa, produced by enrico piaggio. the concept is much more like a modern incarnation of the iconic vehicle, which now showcases sleek styling cues with streamlining features, but still has a retro feel. although with a wider front, the front mudguard houses the LED headlight like the original.

4 – katalis debuts EV.1000 the arsenale special edition electric motorcycle

with an intriguing darken and geometric form, the katalis EV.1000 the arsenale special edition is exactly that – special. the electric motorcycle was designed and produced by young designers based in jakarta, indonesia in collaboration with the french automotive gallery the arsenale. it follows the success of its WWII fighter aircraft-inspired predecessor, the katalis EV.500.

5 – fuller moto builds futuristic 2029 electric motorcycle with 3D-printed titanium parts

fuller moto has built the 2029, a futuristic electric motorcycle with a fully enclosed sculptured aluminum body, hub-centric steering, clear polycarbonate wheels and 3D-printed titanium parts. commissioned by the haas moto museum and sculpture gallery, whose expansive collection includes over 190 unique and one-of-a-kind motorcycles from 1901 to present day, the bike is designed in the style of the french 1929 majestic. in keeping with the aesthetic and character of the original majestic design, the fuller moto team set out 100 years later to create another revolutionary kind of motorcycle with their 2029.

6 – poimo, an inflatable electric scooter that fits inside your backpack

as our list of TOP 10 motorcycle and scooter designs of 2020 blows up, take a look at the poimo — portable and inflatable mobility — which is a soft and transportable personal electric scooter that can be inflated with air. created in collaboration by kawahara lab / niiyama lab of the university of tokyo and mercari R4D of mercari, inc, poimo aims to redefine electric personal mobility by combining it with soft robotics. with a total weight of 5.5kg, it is so compact that it can be folded into an average-sized backpack.

7 – italjet dragster scooter returns with limited edition black and gold

first conceptualized at EICMA in milan in november 2019, it marked the return of the iconic italjet dragster scooter. the much loved two-wheeler from the late 1990s was given a new re-design that continued its quirky yet performance-driven styling. launched in september 2020, the dragster is available in three bold colorways: anthracite, red and white; anthracite and yellow; and black and gray. the first 499 customers were offered a special black and gold livery to coincide with the return.

8 – eastern spirit garage customs yamaha XS650 into black and gold bobber

polish custom shop eastern spirit garage has transformed a 1980s yamaha XS650 motorcycle into an openwork bobber. the original was a special edition bike which appeared more like a chopper than the workshop’s traditional base models – café racers. the longer wheel base provided a new challenge, with the result unifying an impression of elegance to its inherent muscularity. it was then finished in a black base coating complemented by a double gold pin stripe.

9 – monolithic urbet ego electric moped is designed for urban mobility

bridged between two distinct wheels, the urbet ego is an electric moped with a unique monolithic design only akin to a bicycle. the spanish brand, first founded in 2016, already has a name for doing things differently. their electric model continues this trend, complimenting its special shape with handling and efficiency performance that is ideal for city life. a 3000 W motor powers it to a top speed of 56 mph and – together with a 72 V lithium battery – for a range of up to 75 miles per charge.

10 – this custom-made BMW R9T by zillers garage is a mad max dream

to close our TOP 10 motorcycle and scooter designs of 2020, moscow-based zillers garage unveiled a steampunk, mad max-like custom-made BMW R9T motorrad. the one-off motorcycle takes BMW’s new R18 cruiser and redesigns the outer body without touching the internal build. this redesign features a shell made entirely from fabricated aluminum parts. from the headlight to the tail-light, everything flows through the metal-finished mass that results in a somewhat post-apocalyptic aesthetic.
