SPOTLIGHTING THE top off-grid cabins OF 2022

Defined as small houses or cottages typically located in rural areas, cabins come in many shapes and sizes. Generally modest and cozy dwellings found in a variety of climates, they are often designed to be peaceful and secluded. Over the years, as the off-grid lifestyle has become more popular, many cabins have been built for people seeking independence from normal utilities, self-sufficiency, an escape from hectic city life, and a close connection to nature. Despite varying briefs and locations, our TOP 10 list compiles the best projects of 2022 that allow residents to get off the grid — from a collection of elevated human-scale nests in Uruguay to a tiny house on wheels traveling through Portugal.

We continue our annual review of this year’s BIG stories with a look at the TOP 10 off-grid cabins featured on designboom in 2022.

image by Hook & Hammer Creative Media

Australian eco-accommodation company EYRE.WAY has just launched its second off-grid luxury tiny cabin named ‘Maldhi’. Surrounded by native vegetation, it sits cliffside and boasts world-class views of the Eyre Peninsula’s southern coast, overlooking the cliffs of Sleaford Bay in Australia.

‘EL AGUACATE’ WEEKEND HOUSE COMPOSES OFF-THE-GRID LIVING EXPERIENCES IN MEXICO

all images by César Béjar Studio + Dove Dope

Práctica Arquitectura reexamines the concept of weekend houses approaching environmental, social, economic, and aesthetic factors in the shape of ‘El Aguacate’ in Santiago, Mexico. Given that cityscape and countryside definitions have been blurred by means of transportation and the operational flexibility provided by digital connectivity, the project attempts to design a contemporary vacation residence committing to solely necessary motions.

Following an initial scheme of concentric squares, the design of the house was developed in a geometric and structural programmatic order that was later subverted to increase the size of the terrace and resting zone. The rooms and services are spread over three cells forming around the central space. The solidity of the structure and the landscape design in apparent stone accentuate the stony and monolithic appearance of the house.

Adding to the isolated nature of the site, the property has no vehicular access, no piped water, and no electricity.

The ‘tree house‘ is designed as a simple structure that can be ideally constructed by amateur weekend builders with a limited construction budget. Thus, the entire space encompasses only a single room and was built with a budget of only $20,000 USD.

A quaint retreat in the forested landscape of Nederland, Colorado, this tiny net zero carbon cabin is built with local and reused materials for an eco-friendly living experience that offers inhabitants a chance to reconnect with nature. Built by Michael Quirk using only simple and sustainable materials, the cabin highlights the potential designers have to turn the construction industry’s contribution to climate change on its head by rethinking their building practices.

spotlighting the top 10 NFTS of 2022

This year has seen a new way of thinking about currency, property, and art, and it seems there are quite a few who have embraced this art form. NFT, meaning non-fungible token, is the registration of ownership of a digital object on a blockchain. It can be any type of media, including but not limited to art, videos, music, GIFs, games, tweets, and memes. The non-fungible part means the object is unique, making it irreplaceable.

From a fully-nude Madonna exploring the concept of creation to a reinterpretation of renaissance masterpieces with modern brushstrokes — we continue our annual review of this year’s BIG stories with a look at the TOP 10 NFTs featured on designboom in 2022.

DIGITAL SPACE OF TODAY IS THE OPPOSITE OF FREE SPACE’ – NFT BY ROBERT MONTGOMERY

TOP 10 NFTs of 2022

Artist Robert Montgomery’s first NFT critiques the pervasiveness of the digital world © Robert Montgomery

After recently wowing the world with his solar-powered political billboard at COP26, acclaimed British contemporary artist Robert Montgomery has entered the NFT arena with his signature text-based work, a blade runner-Esque manifesto damning the evils of the digital world. the work was released by New Pavilion, a consulting agency collaborating with some of the world’s most celebrated artists’ estates, contemporary creators, arts foundations, and cultural institutions.

Through this artwork, Montgomery explores the existential sphere of the digital world. Specifically, he looks at how digital communication and devices have become the managers of our time and how tracks of our biographies are now reflected back at us within advertising media. By doing so, he ultimately questions the fate of our intellectual and emotional freedoms, as well as our connection to the natural world.

MADONNA BIRTHS A TREE, BUTTERFLIES AND CENTIPEDES IN NSFW TRIPTYCH OF NFTS

TOP 10 NFTs of 2022

Mother of Creation, an NFT triptych by Madonna and Beeple

Following a year of work, Madonna and Beeple have released Mother of Creation, an NFT triptych dropping today on SuperRare. The works, which feature animations of a fully-nude Madonna, explore the concept of creation, motherhood, and birth via darkness and light in our modern world. Received with some skepticism, the collaboration has many asking the infamous But Why? question. As artnet states, ‘we live in a dystopia… and I feel nothing.’ It’s for people who live lives so media-saturated and irony-poisoned that nothing feels real.’

‘When Mike (Beeple) and I decided to collaborate on this project a year ago, I was excited to have the opportunity to share my vision of the world as a mother and an artist with Mike’s own unique point of view.’ said Madonna. ‘It’s been an amazing journey building this together from an intellectual idea to an emotional story, giving birth to art. I wanted to investigate the concept of creation, not only the way a child enters the world through a woman’s vagina, but also the way an artist gives birth to creativity. Most importantly, we wanted to use this opportunity to benefit mothers and children who are most in need right now.’

TOP 10 NFTs of 2022

kleee02 NFT laser projection at villa Diana, Zurich, 2019

Swiss artist Johannes Gees has been working with NFTs long before most of us even heard the term ‘non-fungible token‘. Fascinated by new technologies and their potential, Gees has been exploring both digital and physical spaces since 1999. In 2019, he created his first NFT named ‘proof of destruction’. in that same year, the artist collaborated with Kelian Maissen on a collection of 360 NFTs called ‘kleee02’, a laser platform that references a famous Paul Klee quote,‘a line is a dot that went for a walk’.

At the 2022 edition of Engadin Art Talks (E.A.T.) Johannes Gees was in conversation with gallerist Nina Roehrs to discuss the artist’s kleee02 NFT projection. designboom also caught up with Gees during the weekend-long art event in Switzerland to examine the evolution of digital art and how NFTs are changing the game for artists.

DYNAMIC NFT OF GAUDÍ’S ICONIC CASA BATLLÓ BY REFIK ANADOL SELLS AT CHRISTIE’S FOR $1.38M

image via Casa Batlló

Refik Anadol’s ‘Living Architecture: Casa Batlló’ is a dynamic NFT of the façade of Antoni Gaudí’s iconic Casa Batlló in Barcelona. The digital artwork, which was auctioned off at Christie’s on May 10 for $1.38 million, uses environmental data gathered in real-time from sensors placed around the site. As such, the pioneering masterpiece changes depending on the city’s weather, data collected in real-time, and the events celebrated on the façade of the famous building, including Saint George’s Day and Christmas. Casa Batlló is the first UNESCO World Heritage building that has been reinterpreted in an NFT form.

‘Gaudí is an amazing inspiration for any creator and Casa Batlló a dream work to dive into,’ notes the pioneering AI artist and digital architect while reflecting on the challenge of reinterpreting the renowned spanish architect’s work and principles. ‘From its organic architecture, inspired in nature, to the smallest details on its many mosaics, it is a privilege to reinterpret such an alive legacy and bring it to the 21st century, guided by Artificial Intelligence.’

Emphasizing the movement’s ‘rebirth’ of human-centered understanding of thought, Değirmenci’s simplification of these infamous, historic artworks hones in on their fundamental underlying beauty.

The visual and motion artist launched this series as a collection of NFTs with Dubai’s Art World Creation NFT Gallery. Each purchased NFT also comes with a physical framed digital screen, both of which have been minted together by Octopus Signage.

DAMIEN HIRST DESTROYS 1,000 PHYSICAL ARTWORKS OF ‘THE CURRENCY’ IN FRONT OF NFT BUYERS

damien-hirst-nft-the-currency-designboom-1800

images courtesy of HENI

The fate of the artwork was in the buyer’s hands when Damien Hirst decided he would burn the physical copies of his uniquely made artwork The Currency, priced at 2,000 USD each, if people bought its NFT counterpart. Collectors could not own both the NFT and physical artwork, so they had to choose one under a deadline (more on that here).

True to his word, Hirst destroyed the first 1,000 physical artworks of The Currency at Newport Street Gallery on October 12th, tossing the dollars NFT aficionados digitally handed the artist into the fire (at least it was a state-of-the-art-looking fireplace). Buyers and onlookers flocked inside the white tent, basking in the scent of smoke and anticipation, and happily eyed the modest grin on Hirst’s face as his fire-resistant gloved hand made its way into the pyre to fling or gently lay down a piece of his dots-covered paper that was worth bucks into the flames.

ITALIAN GOVERNMENT BANS NFT SALES BY MUSEUMS TO PROTECT THEIR CULTURAL HERITAGE

Michelangelo’s Doni Tondo (1505-06) | courtesy of the Uffizi Gallery

The Italian government aims to stop digital art sales by museums to protect the country’s cultural heritage from NFT frauds. This decree is a reaction to the recent 240,000€ sale of an NFT of Michelangelo’s work from which Florence-based art gallery Uffizi received only 70,000€. The country’s ministry responsible for regulating the Italian museums has requested institutions to halt agreements with NFT providers.

The decision to stop contracts with NFT companies came after the sale of Michelangelo’s Doni Tondo NFT from the Uffizi Gallery last year. The sale was directed by the Milan-based tech company Cinello, as part of a five-year contract to digitalize artworks from the museum’s collection. The Gallery received less than one-third of the achieved price, although they have agreed on a share of fifty percent — as a Cinello spokesperson told the Art Newspaper. The tech company took so much in fees that the museum only got 70,000€. The works were produced in editions of nine, with a price between 100,000€ and 250,000€ each.

WIKIPEDIA VOTES AGAINST CLASSIFYING NFTS AS ART

wikipedia-votes-against-classifying-nfts-as-art-designboom-1800-2

image by Christie’s (Beeple (b. 1981) Everydays: the first 5000 days)

A group of editors on Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia, has voted against categorizing nonfungible tokens (NFT) as a form of art. it all started on the platform the past December. The Wikipedia editors were questioning if sales reached up to 60 million dollars — like Pak’s $ 91 million collections and Beeple’s $ 69 million NFT — should be on the list. Following a public debate, five Wikipedia editors have voted not to classify NFTs as art and just one was opposed.

‘Wikipedia really can’t be in the business of deciding what counts as art or not, which is why putting NFTs, art or not, in their own list makes things a lot simpler. There’s a separate issue of artificial price inflation of NFTs, though that’s something that would need to be decided in the NFT list and not here,’ said a Wikipedia editor in a talk.

Japanese designer Nanako Kume presents her delightful pendant light series made of large wood shavings. Inspired by the scraps left behind from sharpening coloring pencils, she created each shaving with the help of a machine built like a giant pencil sharpener. On the concept behind her project, Kume writes: ‘Since childhood, I was fascinated by the shape and fleetingness of shavings that are made when sharpening pencils. I thought that by increasing the size and thickness of what must be discarded as waste, it would be possible to create new products while maintaining the beauty of the shape.’

With the advent of MP3, the 2000s sealed the gradual disappearance of the audio cassette, then of the compact disc. LIGHTYEAR 0 CAN DRIVE FOR MONTHS WITHOUT CHARGING USING SOLAR-PANEL ROOF

Lex Hoefsloot believes that the use of electric cars moves society in the right direction, but the car designs have a scaling problem and that by 2030, 84 million electric vehicles (EVs) can be expected to run on roads in Europe alone. Forming part of his personal response to what he deems an industry challenge, he co-founded the company Lightyear and has recently introduced Lightyear 0 to the public, a solar-ready car that imbues his strategy of delivering more range with less battery, reducing weight and CO₂ emissions per vehicle.

What makes the vehicle solar-ready lies in its optimized solar roof, a design approach that means the car can drive for weeks, even months, without charging. ‘In cloudy climates, based on the average commute of around 35 kilometers per day, you can drive for up to two months before you need to think about charging. In sunnier countries, that could be up to seven months,’ the company shares.

ONE-SEATER CONCEPT ‘POLESTAR 1:1’ DRIVES THROUGH 1 KILOWATT PER KILOGRAM RATIO

Jeroen Claus, the lead designer and co-founder of VoyagerCo, has conceptualized Polestar 1:1 as a response to the power-to-weight ratio by adopting the idea of one kilowatt for every kilogram. His car design is made of flax fiber that confers the car concept a durable and lightweight built and design while the silver-white color boosts the automotive’s simplicity as it focuses more on performance and features.

Claus describes his creation as an ‘aim to bridge the gap between the physical and digital dimensions and an experience in which all senses of the driver are treated to an enormous experience.’ The single-seating feature offers solo cruising that hopes to gift the immersive experience Claus was trying to pinpoint. The conceptual design might also be a potential foundation for more driverless cars and electric automobiles in the future.

Located in Minas Gerais, Brazil, at an altitude of 1470 meters above sea level, ‘Cancha House’ emerges as a dreamy residence for those who appreciate tranquility and love the mountain views. Designed by São Paulo-based Estudio HAA!, the resulting composition came out quite effortlessly as if the site demanded it: the existing rocks became part of the design, acting as the columns of the house. CLT (cross-laminated timber) beams rest on the top of the stones, defining the total height of the structure. Therefore, the design team employed a simple rectangular geometry optimizing views towards the mesmerizing scenery.

KUROSAWA KAWARATEN TRANSFORMS NEGLECTED HOUSE IN RURAL JAPAN INTO LOW-BUDGET HOME OFFICE

TOP 10 reader submissions of 2022 — private spaces
image © Masato Chiba

Kurosawa Kawaraten‘s latest project sees a renovation of an abandoned cabin, located in the rural area of Chiba, Japan. The plan is based on a concept that brings new life to buildings unnecessary to the owners and locals in order to host outsiders that were affected by the worldwide crisis and had to move to the suburbs.

The brief was to design a multi-purpose structure for happy remote workers, introducing a very innovative lifestyle for Japan. The entire project was established on a low budget, and thus, the design team decided to rejuvenate an available small structure next to the main building, decreasing the construction costs.

As part of ‘the Ichihara Life and Work Commission’, a public-private partnership to accept people who want to move to the countryside, the project is conceived to host people forced to work from home. Therefore, the dwelling takes shape as a mixed-use structure, celebrating the traditional wooden craftsmanship of the area.

nLDK ARCHITECTS’ ENGAWA HOUSE BLENDS CUES FROM TRADITIONAL JAPANESE ARCHITECTURE

Nara-based studio nLDK has completed ‘Engawa House’, adhering to the rational traditions of Japanese design. As the plot owned an irregular slope, the design team decided to place the structure on a concrete platform, preventing landslides. This way, a strip flooring is formed, running in the full length of the facade — the so-called engawa. therefore, the final composition plays with different levels, while the access to the dwelling is carried out through a staircase that connects the sunken garden with the house.

‘VILLASOFIA’ EMERGES AS A GLAZED VOLUME SEEMINGLY BREAKING TRADITIONAL EAVES APART

TOP 10 reader submissions of 2022 — private spaces
image © Néstor Medina Arquitectura

Within the Colombian highlands of eastern Antioquia nestles ‘VillaSOFIA,’ a residential project conceived by Néstor Medina Arquitectura for a private client. The studio was tasked to design an extension of a colonial-era ‘Paisa’ house typology occupied by three different generations — starting with the owners’ grandparents, then parents, and finally themselves.

In addition to preserving that generational legacy, the project challenges growing real estate pressure triggered by the boom of sumptuous modern developments, radically stripping the region from its historical architecture. ‘In a way, the project departs from this real estate trend and decides to honor the construction that for more than seventy years has given shelter to an entire family legacy and has it available to reinterpret its new use,’ writes the studio.

The resulting house extension, therefore, reveals a striking ‘tension’ between tradition and modernity; emerging from the center is a glazed volume delineated on three sides by clay-tiled eaves echoing the colonial archetype just a few meters away. These structures ‘approach each other, but do not touch, resulting in a small uncovered expansion that represents a transition of uses,’ notes the team.

PLAYSTUDIO’S ‘MORE THAN WHITE HOUSE’ REINTERPRETS COASTAL VILLAS IN SPAIN

playstudios-mtw-house-1-claims-mediterranean-white-can-no-longer-be-neutral-1-6335aac119003

image © Luis Díaz Díaz

The architectural team at PLAYstudio designed a residence in Spain‘s coastal city, Alicante, reclaiming local architectural identity. The ‘More Than White House 1’ is the first in a series of middle-class villas that attempt to overcome the paradox of pristine white as a sterile symbol of both popular architecture and luxurious houses on the coast. Interested in reproducing Spain’s modern era design styles, the studio created this white two-story house in 1960’s coastal typologies.

From the exposed structural grid to full brick or lattice surfaces, this building stands against the importation of global architectural clichés, while, also, contemporizing the front of the Mediterranean White Coast. Following the aesthetic reference that characterizes the area, the residence adopts white color as the main feature presenting it in diverse textures. Dissociating from the identical cubic single-family houses, it claims to be ‘More Than White House’.

WUTOPIA LAB CONVERTS DISUSED BARNYARD INTO GOLDEN YELLOW HAVEN IN SHANGHAI

Chinese practice Wutopia Lab returns with the revival of an abandoned barnyard in Chongming, Shanghai — transforming the site into a colorful land art dubbed ‘cockaigne of everyman’. Golden yellow permeable concrete evoking a paddy field, with dark red lines, form an everlasting barnyard scene. Some parts are divided into blocks while others are scalloped — and in the open areas, the terrain rises slightly, forming a ‘grain pile’ with undulating heights on which to stand. looking at the entire site, one might think it is frozen at a particular ‘harvest’ time.

On the project name, lead architect Ting Yu comments: ‘what we associate with the barnyard is a farm lifestyle and certain material fantasies of the time. in any case, the expression of the barnyard is simple and direct. so I decided to use the golden color to symbolize the harvest that never ends. I wanted the cockaigne to be a place of eternal leisure, superb food, and edible buildings.’

Nestled in rural Zhejiang, China, the Qingxi Culture and History Museum by UAD is positioned as a small, stone-clad, and terraced building that integrates a tourist center and plenty of spaces for display. The site sits far away from the hustle and bustle of city life, with only one country road connecting several villages nearby. Every now and then, museum visitors can catch a glimpse of locals working the fields around the area.

As noticeable from the exterior design, UAD prioritized blending the architectural silhouette into the site’s terraced landform. This is perfectly exemplified by the building’s rooftops planted with crops to harmonize with the terraced fields nearby. Due to a great height discrepancy, the plot features recessed platforms ascending from north to south, with an expansive view northwards. Meanwhile, terraced fields emerge on the east and west, embracing the sight of rolling mountains in the distance.

The interior spaces are created following the external form. Irregular walls and staggered roofs make every room unique and full of variations, like the diverse paths in the countryside. Natural light penetrates windows and skylights and falls onto the walls and the floor, generating varying scenes in the space.

60,000 METERS OF HEMP ROPE TRANSFORMS ABANDONED SCHOOL INTO BOUTIQUE HOTEL IN BEIJING

image © Domain Architects

Domain Architects has rented and transformed an old school building into a high-end boutique hotel in the mountainous area surrounding the city center of Beijing, China. The site for the new Beijing MM Farm hotel was previously a primary school abandoned for years in a rural village, consisting of four rows of brick and timber frame houses surrounded by high perimeter walls.

In order to preserve the original structure as it was found Domain Architects leaves the facades of the cluster of buildings untouched, instead using 60,000 meters of removable hemp rope to ‘wrap’ around the hotel in a uniform, mesh-row pattern. A sustainable renovation project with a close to zero carbon footprint, the architects primarily use local and natural materials such as timber and hemp, and local labor for the construction.

POP-UP DOUBLE THE SIZE OF THE COLOSSEUM, PIERPAOLO LAZZARINI’S PANGEOS TERAYACHT IS A FLOATING CITY

image © Pierpaolo Lazzarini

Proposing a giant floating continent, double the size of the Roman Colosseum, Pierpaolo Lazzarini returns with a new innovative, monumental terayacht concept. The Pangeos watercraft is an itinerant floating city, comprising various hotels, shopping centers, parks, ship and aircraft ports, and all other facilities needed to house up to 60,000 guests in the middle of the sea.

The terayacht proposal takes its name from Pangea, the supercontinent that existed millions of years ago during the late Paleozoic and early Mesozoic eras. Translating this into a somewhat futuristic expression, Pangeos extends its length for 550 meters (1,800 ft) and measures 610 meters (2,000 ft) at its widest point — the wings. If realized, the turtle-shaped vessel will become the world’s largest structure ever built.

OLSON KUNDIG WEAVES TOGETHER THE COMPLEX LIFE AND WORK OF BOB DYLAN IN TULSA

TOP 10 museums and cultural venues of 2022

image © Matthew Millman

Olson Kundig celebrates the completion of the Bob Dylan Center, a project combining immersive exhibition design and restoration all spanning a whole block in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The space occupies a 100 year-old building that was once a paper factory, a context which plays a great role in the all-American spirit of the project.

This was an international design competition which partners Alan Maskin and Tom Kundig pursued jointly — it proved to be the perfect match as Olson Kundig is one of the few firms in the world that specializes in both architecture and exhibit design. Actually this wasn’t the team’s first proposal. The original design proposed an entirely new building which fused the exhibits with newly built architecture. Shortly after the group was awarded the project five years ago, the warehouse space — a former gallery adjacent to the Woody Guthrie Center — had become available and a new piece of architecture was not needed. Since that moment, the team focused entirely on exhibit design.

In the early stages of the process, it was announced that Bob Dylan himself — who is just celebrating his 81st birthday this Tuesday, May 24th — would not be involved in the project. ‘I was actually incredibly relieved,’ Alan Maskin told designboom, ‘because I didn’t want to make a monument to a rock star. I wanted to use the example of his life and career and his creative trajectory as an example for others.’

KENGO KUMA’S IRREGULAR ALUMINUM-CLAD FACADE INVITES VISITORS TO ALBERT KAHN MUSEUM IN FRANCE

image ©︎ Michel Denance

On the outskirts of Paris, the new Albert-Kahn art museum has opened its door to the public following the rehabilitation work and realization of a new building by the renowned architect Kengo Kuma. An envelope made from irregularly placed aluminum strips catches passersby’s attention from afar and endows the spaces with a play of light and shadow. The uneven aluminum roof that tops the structure reflects the nuances of the sky and welcomes visitors to discover the vast Kahn collections in a unique architecture of 2300 sqm.

The final design reveals a strong conceptual element that sees a reinterpretation of ‘Engawa’, a traditional physical medium of Japanese architecture. The meaning of Engawa is ‘in-between space’, and describes a filter between the inside and the outside. Thus, the design team sought to blend architecture and landscape, creating a seamless symbiosis between the display space and tame nature — an intention that is reinforced by lush gardens that pierce the building.

Bundanon – a reimagined art destination situated near Nowra in the city of Shoalhaven, Australia – will be opening its new art museum and bridge for creative learning to the public on Saturday 29th January 2022, with an official ceremony and festival of events being held on Saturday 5th march 2022.

Embedded within the landscape, the new 500 sqm museum, designed by Kerstin Thompson architects (KTA) will present a year-round program of exhibitions of modern, contemporary, and first nations art, as well as new commissions. Drawing inspiration from rural Australia’s trestle flood bridges, the design responds efficiently to current and future climatic conditions — the 160-meter-long bridge allows floodwaters to flow beneath it, while the art museum is concealed inside a hill to protect itself against heat and wildfires. The project is a collaboration between KTA, landscape architects Wraight Associates with Craig Burton, and sustainable design engineers Atelier Ten.

looking back at 2022’s top 10 installations by our readers

As we continue our review of 2022’s biggest design stories, we take a look at some of the most exciting installations created by our readers. Over the past year, artists, designers, and architects alike have used the power of their mediums to present innovative and immersive ways of capturing their audiences attentions, both spatially and conceptually. Most notably, we saw many designers testing the boundaries of nature to create not only thought-provoking sculptural pieces, but also environmentally-conscious functional devices dedicated to preserving our ecosystems.

From a site-specific installation transforming a tree trunk into a primitive concert space, to a living plant robot wielding a machete, to a stool made of fungi that bloom into flower-like mushrooms — we highlight our TOP 10 installations from our reader submissions of 2022.

LIVING PLANT CONTROLS A MACHETE THROUGH AN INDUSTRIAL ROBOT ARM

David Bowen’s installation, ‘Plant Machete,’ enables a living plant to move a machete through an industrial robot‘s bionic-like arm. The installation implements a control system that measures electrical noises found in the living philodendron. This system uses an open source micro-controller connected to the plant, which reads varying resistance signals across the its leaves.

The machine’s movements are accomplished by using a custom technology that translates electrical signals from the plant into real-time motion. Embedded patch sensors pick up electric signals from the leaves and transmit them to the machine that contains several joints that determine how the machete swings, jabs, slices, and interacts in space.

Swiss designer Boris Dennler created a recycled chair made out of deformed 887 CDs and DVDs titled ‘Compact Disc Chair.’ Through experimentation, the iridescent discs are deformed with heat and fixed by screws and assembly glue onto a rounded wooden skeleton cut by a digital mill — giving new value and purpose to these soon-to-be-obsolete products.

Since 2004, Dennler’s work has essentially focused on recycling, and for this project, he re-imagined the use of compact discs as their product cycle has been dying for the past 17 years.‘Physical hardware is gradually being replaced by the cloud, streaming, and USB keys. With the advent of MP3, the 2000s sealed the gradual disappearance of the audio cassette, then of the compact disc. Nevertheless, the vinyl record has managed to survive somehow, to currently experience a renaissance, pampered by a few aficionados,’ he writes.

spotlighting the top 10 renewable energy projects of 2022

This year, designboom introduces a new round-up of TOP 10 BIG stories: the most impactful solutions coming out of the renewable energy industry. Between a solar-powered car that drives for months without charging, a spine-like device that converts wave movement into electricty, and using vertical-farming technologies to turn clean energy into fresh algae, 2022 saw an incredible push for greener and more affordable alternatives to climate-destructive fossil fuels, each harnessing one or several of mother nature’s resources: wind, sun, water, and flora.

Continuing the tradition of welcoming the new year with our BIG stories wrap-up, we spotlight below the TOP 10 renewable energy solutions featured on designboom in 2022.

HELIOWATER SPHERES USE SOLAR POWER TO TURN SEAWATER INTO CLEAN DRINKING WATER

In 2019, UNICEF and the World Health Organization published a report revealing 1 in 3 people globally do not have access to safe drinking water. In response, designers and inventors around the world are developing novel ways of accessing clean water. The latest idea comes in the form of HelioWater, a French company conceived by Marine Tech. Composed of large spheres mounted onto a metal frame, the HelioWater device relies on a large solar panel at its base to power the purification process, with each module of 1 sqm producing 10 liters of water per day. This method is completely autonomous and works using evaporation, condensation and mineralization. Seawater is pumped into the sphere, where it evaporates and condenses onto the inside surface of the top dome. Clean drinking water then drops to the bottom and is pumped away.

UNÉOLE COMBINES SOLAR AND WIND POWER TO DEVISE AN IDEAL RENEWABLE ENERGY SYSTEM

courtesy of Unéole

French startup Unéole has developed a silent, mixed-energy system that combines solar and wind power, specifically adapted to city buildings. The proposed mechanism comprises wind turbines covered with a photovoltaic rooftop to maximize energy production by 40%, compared to a pure solar solution. Indeed, pairing two renewable power sources gives the possibility to alternate between them depending on weather conditions. As photovoltaic efficiency relies on solar radiation, wind turbines can take over at night or during winter when radiations are usually weak, making them the ideal complement.

OFFSHORE FLOATING WIND TURBINE ‘SEATWIRL’ STORES KINETIC ENERGY TO STABILIZE VOLTAGE

Swedish wind turbine company SeaTwirl has patented the storage of kinetic energy in its turbines which the company states can help optimize the rotational speed of a wind turbine and stabilize the voltage fluctuations. So far, the company has this patent in France, El Salvador, the UK, Ireland, and the US. The solution stems from a problem with wind power where voltage fluctuations are caused by variations in wind speed. The company states that the solution works by moving mass to or from the center of rotation. By doing so, the output power can be maintained with less wind and thus be optimized to reduce fluctuations on the electric grid. ‘It is the same principle as a figure skater who pulls her arms towards her body to spin faster when making a pirouette,’  SeaTwirl writes.

Lex Hoefsloot believes that the use of electric cars moves society in the right direction, but the car designs have a scaling problem and that by 2030, 84 million electric vehicles (EVs) can be expected to run on roads in Europe alone. Forming part of his personal response to what he deems an industry challenge, he co-founded Lightyear and has recently introduced Lightyear 0 to the public, a solar-ready car that imbues his strategy of delivering more range with less battery, reducing weight and CO₂ emissions per vehicle. What makes the vehicle solar-ready is its optimized solar roof, meaning the car can drive for weeks, even months, without charging.

Stora Enso, a renewable-materials company based in Helsinki, is powering up electric vehicles using batteries made from trees, specifically lignin. Trees are composed of 20 to 30 percent of lignin which is a binder that gives wood its stiffness and a reason it resists rotting. Lignin is a by-product of cellulose fiber production, and companies have long turned to and recycled it for their renewable source of carbon. Stora Enso picks it up as a bio-based alternative to fossil fuels and gas that drives vehicles these days.

International researchers at ETH Zurich have found a way to produce aviation fuel using water, carbon dioxide (CO2), and sunlight. The team has designed an all-in-one tower that uses solar energy to produce a synthetic alternative to fossil-derived fuels like kerosene and diesel. According to the creators, the fuel that is produced is carbon-neutral, sustainable, and fully compatible with the existing aviation infrastructure for delivery, storage, and usage in jet engines. Although the device can only convert about 4% of solar energy into gasoline at the moment, the team claims they are trying to increase this efficiency to over 15%.

Iceland-based company VAXA converts clean energy into sustainable nutrition by using algae. Their groundbreaking vertical-farming technology lets microalgae grow indoors, completely independent of the weather conditions outside. Embedded with pink glowing lights (UV LEDs), the sealed and bio-secured module enables all-year-round production of high-quality, pathogen-free, fresh algae with a consistent composition. Focused on minimal water and land footprint, it uses pristine non-marine source water that guarantees a safe and clean process with no cross-contamination.

VAXA’s facility is integrated with one of the world’s largest geothermal plants, utilizing its byproducts (natural CO2 emissions, hot and cold water, and 100% renewable energy) to produce carbon-neutral microalgae. According to the company’s website, algae is rich in protein, and unlike other plant-based sources such as soy, it contains a complete essential amino acid profile and a large number of phyco-nutrients.
